Keep Calm Week 5
ICD-10-CM W55.41XA
October has finally arrived! A few things usually associated with October are dropping temperatures, football games, ghost stories, and the state fair.
From carnival rides to petting zoos the fair has it all! Going to the fair brings out the kid in most of us. The moment that you pull into the fair parking lot, the excitement inside you begins to build. People of all ages, sizes, and backgrounds can be found mingling together down the crowded and bustling midway. Loud music, neon lights, and huge stuffed animals draw us in to spend money playing carnival games designed to ensure our failure, yet we return to play again year after year.
The moment you walk through the fair gates a heavenly aroma of gourmet fair food welcomes you. There is no other smell quite like it, and it can only be experienced at the fair. You will find different types of carnival cuisine scattered all around the fairgrounds, including fair favorites like concoctions of anything fried (and usually on a stick), apples drenched in a multitude of sugary sticky goodness, and that iconic bright pink and blue spun sugar that is as light and fluffy as a cloud!

By the time October rolls around, the hard-working youth of the FFA, 4-H, and other livestock owners have been pampering and grooming their best quality farm animals for months in anticipation of the final livestock show of the year. Each person perfecting their showmanship skills, dreaming of bringing home that Grand Champion ribbon, and hoping to make it to the purple circle with their show animal! This grand finale of the livestock show season is held at the state fair each year.

You can walk inside the livestock barns at the fair and see all these prize-winning animals up-close. While you are taking in the sights (and smells) at the livestock barn, you will probably see some of these hard-working individuals tending to their animals. Showing animals at the fair is rewarding, a lot of fun, but also exhausting.
This week’s ICD-10-CM code is a tribute to all our swine show team members out there. It is hard work trying to keep a farm animal that has an innate desire to do nothing but roll in the mud all day, perfectly clean and manicured for the big show. After reading this code, I guess the pigs don’t always enjoy bath time, and some have retaliated!
