DEEP FRIED TURKEY

X10.2: Contact with fats and cooking oils

November is upon us, which means Thanksgiving is just around the corner. Whether you will be traveling to see family or hosting a holiday feast of your own, now is the time to start making plans.

Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the gathering season. Mid-November until early January is notorious for large holiday gatherings filled with loved ones, food, and unavoidable chaos.

Most home kitchen fires happen at Thanksgiving. I mean, what could go wrong when you are dunking a 15-pound turkey into boiling oil?

According to News 12 in Long Island, accidents from deep-frying turkeys cause five deaths, 60 injuries, and the destruction of 900 homes across the United States annually. Chief Fire Marshal Chris Mehrman reported the flames shooting from a turkey fry vat were tested and reached temperatures over 1,000 degrees!

As dangerous as the kitchen might be on Thanksgiving Day, it isn’t the only holiday activity with the potential to ruin the party.

We have put together a few ICD-10-CM codes that will probably be useful for this holiday season.
