Day 4: PUMPKIN CARVING INJURY

Hollowed out pumpkins, adorned with carved faces, decorate many front porches on Halloween night. As dusk falls, they light up like lanterns thanks to the flickering flame of the candle that rests inside. Their spooky glow radiates into the darkness, adding the perfect creepy ambiance. Because of this eerie glow, the name jack-o’-lantern is often used to describe these vegetable lanterns. The word jack-o’-lantern came from the Irish originally meaning man with a lantern, until a few years later when the word was also used to describe ghost lights. Ghost lights are unexplainable lights, that can faintly be seen at night, hoovering around swamps or wetlands.

Whatever you call them, these carved pumpkins are a symbol of Halloween and are created by families each year. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, 3,200 pumpkin carving injuries were treated in U.S. emergency departments last year.

Here is to safe carving!
