One of our favorite Halloween traditions is dressing up in costumes! Halloween costumes can range from scary and ugly to sweet and cute.

One popular costume that you might see on Halloween night is the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland. This hatter character is quite strange looking and doesn’t act quite right either.

Ever heard the expression “mad as a hatter”?

Beginning as early as the 17th century, records indicate that hat makers really did go MAD! It turns out that mercury is one of the chemicals that was used in the hat-making process, and it was poisoning and driving them insane!

It wasn’t until 1941, that the United States Public Health Service finally banned the use of mercury in the felt industry.
