HIPAA MYTHBUSTER

This blog includes a shared article from HIPAA expert Loretta (Duncan) Maddox, MS, FACMPE, CHC Senior Medical Practice Consultant at SVMIC – State Volunteer Mutual Insurance Company

PHI, also known as protected health information, is any information about the health status, provision of health care, or payment for health care that can be linked to a specific person. This information is usually contained in a medical record and was gathered in a HIPAA-covered entity such as a physician’s clinic.

The main purpose of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act is to protect the privacy and security of an individual’s PHI while providing covered entities with standards meant to raise efficiencies in the healthcare field that ultimately improve the quality of patient care.

Healthcare entities should provide full HIPAA training for all employees, implement safeguards, and designate regular refresher courses to help ensure rules are not forgotten. Staying HIPAA compliant is often stressful and confusing for healthcare providers and their associates. One of the best ways to relieve some of that stress and reduce the risk of violations is to have a clear understanding of the HIPAA Rules.

We would like to share a blog post with you that does a great job at clearing up some of the most popular HIPAA myths and misconceptions, written by Loretta (Duncan) Maddox, MS, FACMPE, CHC.
